SGF Energy Ltd (SGF) consistently strives to balance the reduction of environmental impacts while at the same time expanding its operations to meet growing energy demand. Our environmental stewardship efforts include measures to reduce waste generation, maintain water quality, and reduce emissions through energy efficiency improvements, and investing in new technologies and renewable energy resources.

SGF works to reduce its Greehouse Gas (GHG) emissions and voluntarily participates in programs such as the EPA's ENERGY STAR program to increase energy efficiency. SGF also implements asset-specific conservation programs and biodiversity efforts including Wildlife Habitat Council programs. Several SGF operational facilities have wildlife habitats.

  • Spills
Oil spills are a principal environmental performance indicator due to their potential impacts on the environment. SGF's goal is zero spills. SGF uses environmental metrics to measure performance and identify improvement opportunities. To prevent spills, SGF provides training, procedures, preventive maintenance, equipment inspections and mechanical safeguards. Investigations identify the cause of spills and discharges and corrective actions are taken. When a spill does occur, SGF mobilizes well trained emergency responders to mitigate and remediate environmental impacts.
  • Wastes and Residual Materials
SGF complies with all waste regulations and conducts programs to reduce the volumes of hazardous and non-hazardous materials it generates. Programs for waste minimization, recycling, reuse and reclamation are developed by SGF facilities based on their specific needs. We collect and analyze waste management data from all SGF business units to track, identify and prioritize opportunities for waste minimization.
  • Emissions
SGF is committed to minimizing all types of emissions. An evaluation of emission reduction opportunities is conducted for new facility construction and periodically for existing operations. Reduction efforts include cost-effective energy efficiency measures, incident prevention and prudent operations to reduce flaring, and use of best control practices.

  • Water Discharges

SGF operates advanced wastewater treatment facilities in our refineries and adheres to established standards at our numerous wastewater discharge points. We use best management practices to control storm water pollutants during our construction and operational activities. Refining water consumption is reported to ACC annually and in 2015 we initiated a company-wide program to estimate our water usage.
